Welcome to DC!

Below you will find information to ease your stay in town this weekend. Of course, if you find some information lacking, please feel free to reach out to your local hosts and volunteers who can help you feel like a Washington insider.

SATURDAY WORKSHOPS

PARKOUR BASICS
with local leaders
Brush up on some classic parkour skills and technique! This is ideal for newcomers and those who would like to drill the basics.

BREAK & FLOW
with Rachelle Booker
This introduction to breakdancing course will cover some footwork, freezes, and dynamic moves to spice up your movement repertoire. For example: have you ever filmed a sweet line for the ‘Gram where you just kinda ran out of the frame at the end? That’s common. Finish with a clean dolphin-to-worm combo and your viewers won’t know what hit them. (In all seriousness, this is a fantastic session.)

THE SPACE IN & AROUND PARKOUR MOVEMENT
with PK Move
PK Move is a non-profit focused on bringing parkour to special needs populations, especially older adults. We will share some of the key points in our philosophy with regard to scope of practice which should be useful for coaches or for self-application. We will also give pointers on spotting people with special needs.

Additionally, on Saturday evening leaders from the DC Women’s Parkour Community will lead a discussion on
GROWING A WOMEN’S COMMUNITY.

SUNDAY WORKSHOPS

BUILD YOUR PARKOUR INSTINCTS
with Adrienne Toumayan
Ever wondered if your Parkour instincts would kick in during a real-life scenario? Well, we're not going to hire a bad guy to chase you (although that's a great idea), but we will work through a series of playful drills and exercises in this workshop to sharpen our instincts and develop our reflexes, helping us adapt on the fly and move with ease in situations where we can't plan ahead.

GET YOUR STRETCH ON
with Christie Thomas

It’s day three of the jam and chances are you’re a bit sore… No problem! This stretch sesh will emphasize poses to help you stretch those tight muscles. No mat required!

OVERCOMING IMPOSTER SYNDROME
with Shefali Shah

We've all felt like an imposter at some point, whether it's in our professional or personal lives. We've all attributed our success in getting that one big jump or awesome new job to luck or the right circumstances instead of own innate ability and hard work. Let's talk about what holds us back from believing in ourselves and learn practical tools for combatting feelings of fraud!

Transportation / Getting Around

Driving: Parking can be tricky and D.C. loves to give parking tickets… please look at the signs carefully if you plan to drive and park! We recommend walking or using public transportation, when possible. It will make your life easier AND the environment will thank you.

Metro: You will need a SmarTrip card to ride the rail. More information can be found at WMATA.
Six Virginia Metro stations south of Reagan National Airport (DCA) are closed for maintenance for the duration of our event. Metro service within DC and Arlington will not be affected. Alternative travel options and shuttle info found here.

Ride hailing: Uber, Lyft

Micromobility:

  • Bike-share: Capital BikeShare (docked), Jump (dockless)

  • Scooter-share: Bird, Jump, Lime, Lyft, Skip, Spin

Housing

There is a Facebook group dedicated to housing for the event at the following link: 2019 NAWG Housing Group. Please join the group to link up with fellow out-of-towners or find a local host!

Food

Friday evening: Dinner will be provided courtesy of our gracious host gym, American Parkour (APK), but please feel free to bring your own drinks or side dishes.

Saturday: Plan to bring your own lunch or get food at one of the many fast-casual options near Gateway Park. We will BYO-picnic at the National Mall Saturday evening—there will be tons of food trucks and fast-casual options nearby.

Sunday morning: Breakfast basics will be provided on Sunday at Meridian Hill Park before we dive into training for the day, courtesy of our amazing non-profit sponsor, Parkour Visions.
